This university project responds to the Powerhouse Museum's 100 Climate Conversations podcast. The brief was to translate one recorded conversation into a form that would engage a young adult audience. Drawing inspiration from the Fighting Food Waste podcast episode with Ronni Kahn AO (founder of the food rescue charity OzHarvest), I combined key insights with hand-drawn illustrations to create an engaging visual narrative. The illustrated recipe card aims to initiate conversations about the connection between climate change and food waste.
My work was chosen as one of the student works displayed at the Powerhouse Late: Climate exhibit in July 2023.

This recipe card includes an OzHarvest ‘use it up’ banana bread recipe. By incorporating overripe bananas into the recipe, students are encouraged to reduce their food waste and practice more sustainable habits. The illustrated narrative educates students about how food waste contributes to climate change. The recipe card could be given out at food-related university events and activities such as food co-ops and large-scale pop-up cafes.

Audience Research
The target audience was 18-24 year old university students. I wanted my design to address how the climate crisis is extremely daunting and overwhelming to many young people, who feel they have no power or control. Through my research, I found that this age group is the most likely to waste food due to their living situation and lack of life experience. Young adults waste food mainly due to their disconnect with the cost, preference towards convenience, and poor food management.
