The design aim was to be striking, playful, and inviting to adult readers. The colourful, illustrative, and pattern-like imagery are abstract but still portrayed the contents of the books. The collages were made using ink and acrylic paint textures and then digitally manipulated using Photoshop.
The use of striking and acidic colours also resembles the serious and dark tones of the book’s contents. For Coral Reefs, the acidic colours represent
how coral reefs are dying due to pollution, climate change, and the acidification of the oceans.
